F1 | Racing Point, Hulkenberg: “I was headed to the Nurburgring, I will do everything I can for the team”

For Nico Hulkenberg, the return to Formula 1 was like a bolt from the blue. The German, who arrived at Silverstone during the night for the Racing Point seat test after Perez tested positive for Coronavirus yesterday evening, was on his way to the Nurburgring for tests on the old Nordschleife, but at the call from the Circus it certainly cannot be said no.

“I was on my way to the Nurburgring for a racing project when the call came from Otmar – Hulkenberg said. It happened less than 24 hours ago, so everything is a bit surreal for me at the moment, but I like taking on good challenges, this is definitely one of them. It's a difficult situation for Racing Point and for Checo: he is a friend of mine and also a teammate in the past, so I wish him a speedy recovery. I will continue on my way and I will try to do the best I can for the team."

Otmar Szafnauer, Racing Point team principal did not doubt for a single moment: “Having to find a replacement for Sergio in the short time available is not easy, but with Nico we are on the safe side, knowing the team very well. He definitely gets thrown into the mix, but he's an easy learner and I'm sure he'll adapt to the situation straight away."
