The rain that fell during the first day of testing at the Hungaroring inevitably affected the work of McLaren too. The Woking team placed Sainz in fourteenth place and Norris in eighteenth after the second session characterized largely by adverse weather conditions, not allowing the teams to complete their respective work programs. Furthermore, both Sainz and Norris suffered technical problems which further damaged their day.

“It was a busy Friday – Sainz admitted. We could say that the most indicative session was the first, but we had problems with water pressure on the engine, while in Free Practice 2 the rain came and went, which allowed us to try the Intermediate tyre, even though there shouldn't be any wet sessions Saturday and Sunday. We will work with what we have collected and tomorrow we will draw conclusions."

“It wasn't the best of Fridays – Norris said. The first free practice session wasn't bad, but we had a hydraulic leak in the afternoon which didn't allow me to run. I didn't want to push in wet track conditions. We'll see the data from both cars tonight and the weather seems to be a bit uncertain for tomorrow too, let's see what happens."
