F1 | Pirelli, Isola: “Seven compounds? The criticism surprised me. There are still three compounds per weekend"

From the new season, Pirelli will bring seven compounds throughout the championship, two more than last year. The new entry they are represented by the hypersoft (pink band) and the superhard (orange band, with the hard becoming “light blue”).

This is a choice to expand the number of compounds, which the Milanese tire company defends despite the criticism received from enthusiasts. As Mario Isola, Car Racing Pirelli, declared in an interview with Auto Motor und Sport: “You can't always please everyone, this criticism surprised me. Our job now is to explain everything to people and not to complicate things. There are still three compounds for the weekend. If you put superhard aside, you just need to remember six colors. We're not talking about rocket science".

However, Isola himself admits that Pirelli had also thought about simplifying the coloring system of the various tyres, in order to avoid criticism and discontent: "It was an idea to use hard, medium and soft every weekend and reuse the same color for all races".

"But in my opinion it's not the right message. In Formula One there have always been different aerodynamic packages, different cooling systems, various configurations and more. This is all part of sport”, concluded Isola.
