F1 | Pirelli, Isola: “Race with different strategies”

Lewis Hamilton won the Canadian Grand Prix on Mercedes with a single stop from ultrasoft to supersoft, in a race characterized by numerous strategies. The other two drivers on the podium also made just one pit stop, both opting for soft tires in the second stint. Hamilton completed a longer first stint on ultrasoft and this allowed him to make the stop without losing the lead of the race. Ferrari adopted a different two-stop strategy, so as to complete the race on faster ultrasoft tires to make up positions at the end. In particular, for Sebastian Vettel the strategy was influenced by the damage to the front wing at the start of the race. All drivers started on ultrasoft tyres, except Kevin Magnussen in the Haas and Pascal Wehrlein in the Sauber.

MARIO ISOLA – CAR RACING MANAGER
“Today the weather was breezier than the rest of the weekend, and the race saw some safety cars in the opening laps. These factors added many variables when calculating strategies, which is why we saw teams using several to optimize for various circumstances. Lewis Hamilton completed a long first stint on ultrasoft tires which allowed him to then complete the race on supersoft tyres: the same strategy also adopted by Force India in the fight for the podium. Ferrari reacted to Vettel's first early stop with a two-stop strategy to recover positions at the end.”
