Formula 1 | Gasly excited for the United States GP: “COTA is an exciting and fast track”

After the excellent performance shown in Istanbul, Turkey, Pierre Gasly will be looking for confirmation in the next United States GP, the 17th round of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. The Frenchman from AlphaTauri, on a track that is favorable on paper for the own AT02, will try to battle for the top positions in the standings, with the aim of giving the team important points for the fight for fifth place in the constructors' championship with Alpine and Aston Martin.

“In Turkey our pure performance in qualifying was very good: we were only one tenth behind Ferrari and Red Bull,” said the Frenchman. “I was happy to have achieved the Top 5 in qualifying. Without the penalty, the race could have gone even better, but crossing the finish line just ten seconds from the podium – behind two Mercedes, two Red Bulls and a Ferrari – is a really positive result and it's nice to be able to say that we are close again at the top of the rankings."

“Next stop: United States!”, he continued. “I've never had any great races in Austin so far. The best result was the tenth place we achieved the last time we raced there. It's a really exciting track, very fast and I really like the first sector, it's a bit like Suzuka. The second sector, however, is slower and more technical. Overall it's a very interesting track, although I think this weekend could be quite complicated: the last time we raced there, the track was quite bumpy and, as we saw with the MotoGP a few weeks ago, it seems even worse now ”.

“This will involve finding a compromise in the set-up, but we won't know in what terms until we go on track. I'm not particularly worried, because our car performs well everywhere, but we need to be prepared so that we can continue to close the gap on Alpine in the championship." he concluded.
