F1 | Newey: “Senna? I was one of the designers of the car that killed a great man."

In his autobiography, entitled How to Build a Car (How to build a car), Adrian Newey expresses all his regret for the accident that cost Ayrton Senna's life during the seventh lap of the San Marino Grand Prix, held on 1 May 1994.

Newey, at the time of the events in force precisely at Williams, retraces that absurd tragedy in the book with these words: "Video (the images cited refer to Michael Schumacher's Benetton camera car which followed Senna's Williams, ed.) shows that the car breaks down at the rear. It doesn't matter how that off-piste happened, andI am one of the designers of that machine that killed a great man. I'm the least proud of the aerodynamic change made on that car: switching from active suspension to passive suspension made the car too unstable. Without feeling guilty, I have always admitted a certain responsibility in Ayrton's disappearance."
