F1 | Montezemolo: "With the current climate in Maranello, Bologna will win the Scudetto first."
The former Ferrari number one let out a cutting joke, which captures the difficulties of the Prancing Horse in the Circus
Between Bologna and Ferrari, given their respective situations, results, and trends, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo believes the football team has a better chance of winning the Italian championship before the Prancing Horse returns to a triumphant leading role in Formula 1.
Montezemolo, under whose presidency Ferrari began an important run of victories, ending a 21-year drought in the Drivers' World Championship with Michael Schumacher in 2000, let loose with a cutting quip in a recent interview with Leo Turrini in the columns of the Quotidiano Nazionale.
And Ferrari's last two titles, drivers' and constructors', in 2007 with Kimi Raikkonen and 2008 respectively, came under Montezemolo. Since then, the Reds have not touched the ball, opening a worrying void in the roll of honor that has continued this year, with the SF-25 failing to score a single victory in the 24 GPs it has contested.
A clear step backwards, with Ferrari finishing the season in fourth place in the overall standings behind the queen McLaren, with whom it had challenged for the title in 2024, and Mercedes and Red Bull.
"Will Bologna win the Scudetto first, or Ferrari the F1 World Championship? Given the current climate in Maranello, Bologna will win first," said Montezemolo.
Bologna won their seventh and, so far, last Scudetto in their history in the 1963-64 season. In the final years of Joey Saputo's presidency, the Emilian team returned to the pinnacle of Italian football by qualifying for the Champions League (formerly the European Cup) in 2024. Last year, they added to their tally by winning their third Coppa Italia title, beating AC Milan in the final.
