F1 | Mercedes, Wolff on Cowell's departure: "Our philosophy has always been that a winning team is a dynamic organisation"

On Monday, Mercedes announced a major overhaul of its Brixworth motorsports business, following current Managing Director Andy Cowell's decision to step down from his role from next month.

His role will be split between several engineers, with Hywel Thomas becoming the head of the Formula 1 Power Unit project. Cowell will however continue to be part of the Mercedes group at least until the beginning of 2021, as he will help the company in the transition period and in future project.

Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team commented on Cowell's departure: “Andy Cowell's leadership of the HPP team has been a key factor in our success over the past few seasons. He has made an extraordinary contribution to our motorsport legacy and I have enjoyed our years together since 2013: I am sure he will be successful in the next challenge he decides to take on.”

“Our philosophy has always been that a winning team is a dynamic organization and this change is a natural part of the development of every company. I am very happy that we have been able to work together to create this new structure, building on the strengths of the team in Brixworth. It puts us in a great position for the coming years as we look to create a new benchmark in both Formula 1 and Formula E,” were the Austrian's words in the team's official statement.
