F1 | Mercedes, Wolff: “After Belgium we grew and overtook our competitors”

After a long head-to-head with Ferrari, Mercedes is one step away from celebrating the drivers' and constructors' championship double for the fifth consecutive year. Toto Wolff, team principal of the German team, identified the Belgian GP as a key moment of the season: that rather easy victory by Sebastian Vettel, in fact, spurred the Star men to bring out the maximum in terms of development , from W09. After that race, not by chance, Mercedes scored four consecutive victories with Lewis Hamilton and scaled back Ferrari's ambitions.

“We have taken a big step forward since Spa” – Wolff admitted. “Monza, Singapore and Suzuka are very different tracks and we had the ambition to perform well on all three to prove to ourselves that we are capable of having a good car on any type of track: whether it was the high speed of Monza, the twisty and hot circuit of Singapore or Suzuka, which instead has a bit of everything. I think our car is in a really good position now. We understand the way the aerodynamics work with the tyres, the drivers feel really good and have a lot of confidence in the car - all of this together I think has allowed us to outperform our competitors".

“You must have in the team the experience of people who have experienced similar situations and young people who tackle things without limits, guaranteeing innovation, providing a safe environment and the right mentality” – continued the Austrian manager. “There is no silver arrow; I think it is necessary to combine these skills to achieve good performance”.
