F1 | Mercedes, Toto Wolff: “It didn't go as we wanted”

Bottas is flawless, but will start from the back due to penalties; disaster for Hamilton who will start from fourth position

F1 | Mercedes, Toto Wolff: “It didn't go as we wanted”

Complicated weekend for Toto Wolff, aware that his Mercedes is actually the fastest car on the Monza track: Valtteri Bottas has been impeccable since Friday, concluding a splendid performance today at the head of the group. The Finn wins the Sprint Race Qualifying, but as luck would have it, the team will replace the PU this weekend: Bottas will therefore start from the last row. Different story for Lewis Hamilton, who throws the front row into the wind with the error at the start: he slips to fifth position and despite the good performance of the W12 he fails to worry the two McLarens in front.

"It was a complicated afternoon for us. Valtteri didn't do anything wrong and maintained first position with a great performance. Obviously, this result does not translate into a pole position due to the penalties and it will be a tough race for him, who will have to make his way through his opponents on a track where overtaking is not easy, as we saw today – said the team principal – as far as Lewis is concerned, everything was decided at the start; there was too much sliding, he lost positions and in such a short race there wasn't enough difference in performance to recover positions. It didn't go the way we wanted, but we can still play for it tomorrow. We will look at our options for the strategy of both cars to ensure we get the maximum points available".
