F1 | Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton takes the podium: "I gave everything"

The image of Lewis Hamilton alone on the grid waiting for the green light will certainly remain in the history of Formula 1, but it is precisely the decision of the seven-time world champion and of Mercedes not to return to the pits and remain on the intermediates that changes the fate of Lewis' race. The rest of the group decides to return to the pits to switch to slicks, with the track now dry, and Hamilton has to wait a lap to enter the pit lane and change to medium. The first stint is very tiring for Sir Lewis, struggling with constant blocking in fourteenth position, but on the twentieth lap the only remaining Mercedes returns to the pits to mount the hard. Hamilton will return to the pits on lap number forty-eight to put on new yellow tyres, and from there a fantastic battle begins with Fernando Alonso who keeps everyone glued to the television in the final part of the race: the Spaniard defends himself in a masterly manner, effectively giving lessons to all the drivers on the grid, but it was his mistake - due to the tires running out - that gave fourth place to Hamilton. From there the Brit flies and, after a simple overtaking on Sainz, recovers the gap on the first two, however stopping in third position.

"First of all, I'd like to quickly say congratulations to Alpine and Esteban, he's been a rising star for a while, we've been waiting for this win and I'm very, very happy for him. It's also great to see Aston Martin so high with their best result so far and I know they can do more. The crowds were magnificent this weekend and I'm grateful for the support” said Hamilton, who was widely booed over the weekend, perhaps ironically.

"Today was definitely tough – continued the seven-time world champion – It's absurd to think that I was the only one on the grid at the restart, but these are crazy things that happen in crazy things like this, we'll learn everything there is to learn. I gave everything today, I didn't have any left at the end. At the start of the weekend I didn't know what our performances would be and considering the circumstances I'm holding on to this third position!"
