F1 | Mercedes: Andy Cowell will leave his role at the end of the month

On Monday, Mercedes announced a major overhaul of the structure of its powertrain business, Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains.

The current Managing Director, Andy Cowell, will in fact leave his role starting from 1 July 2020: the English engineer has been an active part in the Power Unit project which has brought great satisfaction to the Star company since 2014. Since he briefed the team in January, Cowell has worked with Markus Schafer and Toto Wolff to review the structure and management of the HPP motorsports business. His responsibilities will be split across the current senior leadership team, with promotions from within to ensure the smoothest transition possible.

The roles will be divided as follows: Hywel Thomas will be the Managing Director and will be responsible for the F1 Power Unit project, Adam Allsopp will be the Project One Powertrain Director, while Pierre Godof will continue in his role as Formula E Powertrain Chief Engineer, responsible for the development of motors for the fully electric series. Andy Cowell will however continue to work with Hywel Thomas, in order to support the management transition and will be part of a Mercedes-Benz AG project until at least the beginning of 2021.
