F1 | McLaren-Mercedes, a faded return story: only the timing compromised the deal
Burning revelation from Toto Wolff, team principal of the German team: "We wanted to supply McLaren with our engines, but the situation dragged on for too long"
Before tacking on Renault, la McLaren she was very close to a sensational reconciliation with Mercedes. She revealed it Toto wolff, executive director of the German team, CEO ESPN: "We wanted to supply our engines to McLaren. The problem is that the issue has dragged on for too long and therefore we would no longer have the structure and ability to supply them with engines for 2018. It was simply too late" – explained the Austrian manager. Only a question of timing, therefore, hindered the possible second act of the glorious partnership between McLaren and Mercedes, already protagonists in Formula 1 of a long-lasting collaboration from 1995 to 2014.
After the shocking revelation, Wolff wanted to underline the accuracy with which Mercedes chooses its own businesses: “In Formula 1, as everywhere in life, both in private and working life, it's about finding compromises, recognizing your partner's strengths and weaknesses and helping each other. This is the culture we have at Mercedes and which has made us successful in recent years. Respect is a very important part of our values and that is why we chose the current partners”.
Finally, Wolff did not spare a jab Red Bull, guilty of having had some unprofessional attitudes during the relationship with Renault: “It is exactly because they act like this and criticize their current partner that they're not finding one!" – he thundered.
