F1 | McLaren Honda, Hasegawa: “We are closing the gap with other engines”
"We will prepare three more upgrades for the Power Unit: we are very confident"
It's a summer of reflection and hard work for Honda. The partnership with McLaren, looking forward to 2018, is creaking and the risk of abandoning it formula 1 is high. The only way to change the mind of the Woking team is to guarantee them a more powerful engine, starting from this second half of the season: "We will prepare two more updates for the Power Unit, but it could be three. In both cases, we will continue to work.", has explained Yusuke Hasegawa, Honda manager, a RACER. “Obviously there are also other things to think about, we will have to carefully study the management of some development steps and the introduction of new specifications. Naturally – continues the Japanese – we will also have to avoid penalties, especially on tracks where we can be competitive, such as Singapore".
From now on, therefore, big developments are expected at Honda: “I am confident that we will improve the performance of the car, even if I don't know the level at which we will settle. We are certainly closing the gap with other engines – concluded Hasegawa – but this is natural since we are the pursuers".
