F1 | McLaren, Alonso on his absence from testing: “I probably would have refused even without WEC”
The two-time world champion will not participate in the tests scheduled in Barcelona for 15 and 16 May, a few days after the Spanish GP
Yesterday the McLaren announced the line-up that will line up for the Barcelona tests on 15 and 16 May: Stoffel vandoorne, Lando Norris e Oliver Turney will take turns driving the MCL33, while Fernando Alonso will not be called into question. The Spaniard's absence is attributable to the exhausting double Formula 1-WEC commitment, which will keep him busy almost every weekend: this Saturday, in fact, he will race in the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, the inaugural stage of the Super Season, and then fly to Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix, which will be held the following weekend.
Interviewed by the newspaper AS, Alonso explained that, regardless of his participation in the WEC, he would not have participated in the two days of testing following the Montmeló race weekend: “We discussed the test calendar in February and I was asked if I wanted to do the tests after the Grand Prix in Barcelona: I said no. That means more rest, yes, but even if I wasn't racing in the WEC, I probably would have been at home anyway.".
