F1 | McLaren, Alonso worried: “Our lack of speed in Canada could penalize us”

The usual, redundant, refrain floats in the McLaren house: according to Fernando Alonso, even in Canada the Woking team could suffer from top speeds. Despite the transition from engines Honda to those of Renault, the English single-seater is once again paying for a long-standing power deficit compared to its direct mid-table rivals: for this very reason, the Spanish driver does not intend to make flights of fancy in view of the Montreal weekend.

“We arrived in Q3 in Barcelona and Monaco, so it would be nice to maintain this trend in the next races and confirm our progress” – the two-time world champion made his debut. “But I think Canada will be challenging: it's a difficult circuit with long straights and our lack of speed will perhaps penalize us. It will be a good test for us.".

Precisely in Canada, McLaren will still be able to count on one evolutionary version of the current Renault power unit: even if the road appears long and uphill, the hope is to bring the performance of the Mercedes and Ferrari engines closer together.
