F1 | McLaren, Alonso positive: “It will be an interesting race”

Good tenth position for Fernando Alonso at the end of free practice in Montreal. The Spaniard from McLaren, author of an excellent race simulation during free practice 2, said he was very optimistic ahead of Sunday's race, underlining however how the MCL33 needs to be improved on a single lap. Stoffel Vandoorne was also competitive, even if the Belgian hit the wall in FP2 which cost him about an hour of work.

Here are the words of Fernando Alonso: “Today the day was quite positive. During FP1 we focused on long runs, while in the afternoon we adjusted the set-up in view of qualifying. We are quite happy with the work done. On this track you have to be fast in the race as overtaking is possible and it doesn't make much sense to spend all your work on Saturday. We have worked from this perspective, but I believe that Q3 is a possible result. I only tested the Hypersoft in FP1 and it's difficult to say how it went, certainly better than Monaco. It's definitely the fastest tire over a lap."

“The race will be interesting with some going for a break and others studying something different. It can be invented and we hope to make the most of this factor." he added.

Here are Stoffel Vandoorne's impressions: “I had an unfortunate contact with the wall in FP2, but overall it was a positive day. We were competitive and got along quite well. We haven't tested the hypersoft, but looking at Fernando's times I think the whole team is in a good position. The balance was a bit 'up and down' for both of us, but for tomorrow we will try to find a balance, setting up the car in the best way possible."
