During the opening press conference of the next United States Grand Prix, the nineteenth round of this 2018 Formula 1 world championship, Fernando Alonso praised the work done by Lewis Hamilton over the last few seasons, underlining how the conquest of the fifth title is something very important for a Formula 1 driver.

Reaching a sacred monster like Juan Manuel Fangio, in fact, means joining an extremely limited club of drivers, equating one's name to the greatest in Formula 1. Hamilton, remember, will have to gain nine points on Sebastian Vettel to mathematically close this world championship already at Austin.

Here are the words of Fernando Alonso: “If I had to list the top five drivers, I would almost certainly say Michael, Fangio, Senna, Prost, and Lewis. It is difficult to compare the times and the drivers listed, given that their victories came in different eras, but there is no doubt that they wrote something important. Hamilton will join Fangio and we are talking about a great result."

“Lewis showed talent and commitment even when the car was dominant”, added the Spaniard. “With inferior technical means, however, he confirmed all his talent and it is something extremely complicated to see, especially nowadays. If there had to be a driver of this generation to do it, I'm happy that that driver is him."

On the Englishman's career he concluded: “He has shown talent since his first day in Formula 1 and not everyone can fight for the title in their first year of experience. He won in 2008 and there we all agreed that certain records would be within his reach. It collapsed in a couple of seasons because of the cars he drove, but he always gave his all, collecting as much as possible. Nobody would have expected such a dominant Mercedes in 2013, but he did well to exploit the package at his disposal.".
