F1 | Marko on the freezing of power units: “We need six votes”
"The agreement that was reached on Friday was no longer available on Monday"
Red Bull remains confident that its rivals will accept a freeze on engine development from 2022.
Austrian team consultant Helmut Marko insists the confrontation is the only way Red Bull's plan to take over Honda's operations can move forward following the Japanese manufacturer's withdrawal at the end of the season.
Last week, F1 chief executive Ross Brawn denied that the teams had rejected the plan but Marko, interviewed by motorsport-magazin.com, clarified:
“The agreement that was reached on Friday was no longer available on Monday”.
It seems that there will be a further vote by the World Motor Sport Council on February 21st and Marko said he is confident that an agreement will finally be reached:
“We need six votes out of ten, just a simple majority”, he commented to f1-insider.com.
“I assume that, in addition to Red Bull and Toro Rosso, the three teams Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Haas, as well as Renault will agree.”
Interviewed by the RTL and n-tv broadcasters on the issue, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff admitted:
“If the freeze is necessary to keep Red Bull-Honda in business, we will support it.”
