F1 | Marko: “Hamilton deserved a drive-through or a suspension”

The controversy has not yet subsided after the British Grand Prix which saw Lewis Hamilton triumph despite the ten point penalty for causing contact with Max Verstappen. Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko said the Mercedes driver should not have won and hopes the stewards, after viewing the footage, presented by the Austrian team, they can change their decision.

“An appropriate penalty would have prevented the victory -Marko commented to RTL- such as a drive-through or suspension for the next race. Something like that. But it depends on the stewards, first of all we are happy that this review has arrived and then we will see how they judge it. But I think what we take forward will put the incident in a different light.”

For the incident to be officially investigated, Red Bull must present relevant new evidence that the stewards did not have during their initial decision at Silverstone. Marko is confident that his team can respect this clause.

“We bring new facts that weren't available to us at the time the race was suspended, or when the whole thing was handled, in part because we were focused on what was going on with Max and how he was doing. These facts will be brought forward at Thursday's meeting and we hope it will lead to a re-evaluation of the penalty. We have footage, but the key point is that we will bring new evidence but I cannot reveal the details."
