F1 | Liberty Media, Brawn: “DRS will still be used in the near future”
However, the sporting director of the Formula 1 project hopes to be able to do without it further down the line
In the near future the DRS (Drag Reduction System) will continue to be an integral part of Formula 1 racing. Ross Brawn, general manager of Liberty Media, explained to business life that the abolition of this device (which reduces aerodynamic resistance and favors overtaking) could be taken into consideration further down the line: "In the short term we will continue to work with DRS. My hope is that machines will develop to the point that we won't need it anymore, but in the near future this will not happen. Before we can improve racing, we need to fully understand what is happening. We can follow our instincts, but that's not good enough when you think about how incredibly complicated these cars are.".
Brawn then made some drastic assessments decrease in overtaking of 2017, mainly due to the exponential growth, in terms of speed, of single-seaters: “Speed plays an important role and fans want to see faster cars. But if we found a way to make racing better, then I'd be willing to sacrifice a little speed".
