F1, the FIA bans the use of DRS at Eau Rouge

Formula 1 drivers will be banned from using DRS at Eau Rouge this Belgian Grand Prix weekend, in fact, after concerns from a safety point of view, the FIA has banned its use.

Several drivers had expressed concern that it might be dangerous for them to risk attempting to perform the Eau Rouge with wings fully open in qualifying, in an attempt to gain valuable time.

A safety system on the cars, which closes the DRS wing when the driver hits the brake, would not have worked at Eau Rouge due to its high speed.

After listening to the drivers' concerns, and looking in detail at the safety risks, the FIA wrote to the teams this afternoon to tell them that the use of DRS will be banned at Eau Rouge in both free practice and qualifying.

In the race this won't be a problem because the single DRS activation zone only starts after Eau Rouge – on the straight from Raidillon to the Les Combes chicane.

The FIA's decision for Eau Rouge comes after a similar request to outlaw DRS in the Monaco tunnel was accepted earlier this year.

Commenting on the FIA's decision, for Vitantonio Liuzzi the Eau Rouge is not a critical situation like the Monaco tunnel.

“The reason why DRS under the tunnel in Munich was asked to be banned was that a wheel-to-wheel contact under the tunnel could trigger a really critical situation.”

“It's different for Eau Rouge. There are escape routes and it is outdoors, there is no roof or pylons. So it could be the spot for a normal racing accident like anywhere else.”
