F1 | The Halo system struggles with aerodynamics
The new safety device continues to arouse skepticism: "We need to work on it"
The safety device Halo could negatively affect theaerodynamics of the single-seaters of 2018. Engineers are already looking for new solutions capable of overcoming the limitations of this protection system: “From a security point of view, Halo could be a positive element, it was introduced precisely for this reason" - has explained Nick Chester, technical director of Renault. "From an aerodynamic point of view, however, it can become an obstacle and we will certainly have to work on it. In any case, I think that no special tricks will be invented due to its presence. The important thing is to mount it on the car and hope that the drivers appreciate it".
He is of the same opinion Paul Monaghan, head of the project office Red Bull: “If we can get a fairing capable of reducing aerodynamic discomfort and making it more aesthetically pleasing, we will opt for that solution. Although I think that in this case aesthetics is not a priority. This device must only guarantee safety for pilots".
