F1 | The new regulations for the 2018 World Championship
There are several new features, such as the one relating to penalties on power units: with more than 15 positions the drivers will start from the back of the group
Yesterday, the World Council of the International Automobile Federation, which met in Paris, in addition to making the Formula One calendar official for the 2018 season, also ratified some new rules which will come into force starting from the next championship.
As far as penalties regarding the power unit are concerned (from 2018 drivers will only be able to rely on three engines for the whole year), every single driver who suffers more than 15 places will be forced to start from the back of the grid. If the penalty concerns more than one driver, then the order in which the sanctions were imposed will be taken into account.
As regards the start times of the races, a certain flexibility will be adopted. However, for the question relating to the tests to be carried out with single-seaters from previous years, it will be possible to carry them out only on tracks with the FIA grade 1 or 1T licence. If the same were to be used in demonstration events, these cannot exceed 50 km of travel.
A new oil specification will also be introduced to prevent it from being used as fuel. The weight and minimum volume of the batteries will also be indicated. With the introduction of the Halo, the position of the cameras and rear-view mirrors will be changed.
Finally, in order to avoid incidents of thefts and robberies, as occurred in Brazil in November, event organizers will have to communicate with local authorities to increase security in the circuit area.
