F1 | Hulkenberg: “I want to stay in the orbit of Formula 1”
"I told myself not to return at any cost"
Nico Hulkenberg has all but confirmed that he will take on the role of reserve driver for Aston Martin in the 2021 season. Team principal Otmar Szafnauer has admitted that there are ongoing negotiations with the German who last year replaced Sergio in some races Perez that Lance Stroll, causes Covid-19.
“Sebastian already has a teammate, so it's a given that I won't be driving the car directly.”, Hulkenberg told the German edition of GQ.
“However, I would like to stay in the Formula 1 orbit and try to find a permanent cockpit for 2022. Who knows what will happen this year. I will wait for my chance, like in 2020."
The German admitted that he has appreciated the more relaxed lifestyle since he is no longer involved in Formula 1 and regarding 2022 he said that he has not yet received a concrete offer:
“There were discussions but there was no agreement. That's why I told myself not to return at any cost,
stay out for a year even at the risk of not returning at all. I spent a good ten years in Formula 1 and I'm not the type of person who should continue to drive. Especially not in the back, just to be there. So I deliberately said no and got to a point where this break was very welcome to me personally.".
