The Englishman will face the Istanbul race with a new ICE: ten positions penalty
First important twist on the weekend of the Turkish Grand Prix, the 16th round of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. Before taking to the track for the first free practice session at Istanbul Park, Mercedes confirmed the replacement of the thermal unit ( ICE) in Lewis Hamilton's single-seater, an aspect that will force him to serve a ten-place penalty on the starting grid of the Grand Prix scheduled for Sunday.
A surprising choice, given that the press and professionals expected a total and not partial replacement. It is not clear whether Mercedes will proceed with the installation of new components of the hybrid in the afternoon or whether the choice will prove definitive for the remainder of the weekend in Turkey. Hamilton, we remember, showed up in Istanbul with a two-point advantage over his title rival, Max Verstappen. A minimal gap that keeps everything on the line for the remaining seven events of this 2021 Formula 1 world championship.
