It wasn't a particularly easy day for Honda. In fact, on Verstappen's car in the morning, an oil leak on the Spec 1 (i.e. the older one) compromised part of the Dutchman's day, who was fitted with the Spec 2, already seen on his RB15, a session early. in Baku. This unit also gave Max some problems (highlighted loss of power, a bit like the previous specification), but he still managed to complete the day without any other problems. In terms of managing the components, Honda has decided to fit the new power unit also on the two Toro Rossos, but this will only happen from free practice on Saturday.

“On the power unit front, everything went smoothly on the Toro Rosso – said Toyoharu Tanabe, Honda's technical director. All four of our cars were equipped today with the Spec 1 of the PU (except Verstappen, who already had the updated engine in FP2, ed.) but for the rest of the weekend the replacement with the Spec 2 is expected. Therefore, we will continue our usual I work with the set-up for qualifying and the race."

“It was a normal Friday, no problems – said Jonathan Eddolls, Toro Rosso's chief race engineer. Here in Spain we brought some updates and spent a good part of FP1 evaluating them, so as to understand if we performed as we expected. In FP1 we struggled a bit to find the best balance while still working on the behavior of the car. It took some time to understand and this made the session a little more complicated, especially for Alex. Between one session and another, we analyzed all the data collected and understood how to make the most of the potential of the new components. So we made some pretty significant changes to optimize the car in FP2 and they turned out to be changes in the right direction. We have completed some tests and made other small changes in order to improve the balance with the soft tires. On the long runs we made a comparison between the tires and the medium ones seemed to work better, but we still have to analyze all the data to find the best race strategy."
