F1 | Russian GP, McLaren: retirement for Alonso, Vandoorne 14th

The Russian Grand Prix, held this afternoon at the Sochi Autodrome, was yet another disappointing race for McLaren-Honda. Fernando Alonso was forced to retire immediately (which occurred on the reconnaissance lap) due to an ERS problem, with Stoffel Vandoorne (14th) being the only driver of the Woking team to take the checkered flag.

"It's a difficult situation – commented Alonso – It's frustrating to have to retire before starting the race. I lost power and my engineer told me to change the settings on the steering wheel, but towards the end of the formation lap the engine stalled. It's sad not to have finished any races since the start of this season, but Formula One remains my life. I hope that the situation can improve as soon as possible".

“14th place was the best possible result – Vandoorne's thoughts –  I made a good start, but had to avoid an accident at the first corner, cutting off a piece of track and suffering a five-second penalty. AND It was a pretty normal race. Fernando's problem shows that there is still a lot of work to do on the reliability front".
