F1 GP Mexico, Qualifying: Ricciardo outdoes Verstappen, Hamilton ahead of the Ferraris
Amazing lap from the Australian, Vettel and Raikkonen miss the last attempt
Amazing pole position for Daniel Ricciardo in qualifying for the Mexican Grand Prix, the nineteenth round of this 2018 Formula 1 world championship. Despite the excellent pace expressed by Max Verstappen yesterday, the Australian pulled off a masterpiece lap during Q3, beating his teammate by just twenty-six thousandths of a second.
A great satisfaction for a rider who has suffered many mechanical problems in recent weeks. Ricciardo, we remember, had not started from pole since the Monaco Grand Prix and it will be reasonable to expect a driver ready to do anything to win. Second place, in fact, for Max Verstappen, truly disappointed with this day in Mexico City: the Red Bull standard-bearer aimed to beat the record of the youngest driver to score a pole, but will have to postpone this important result to the next two events.
It should be noted that the Austrian Scuderia had not monopolized the front row in qualifying since the 2013 United States Grand Prix. Third place for Lewis Hamilton, very good at getting the most out of a difficult weekend, followed by Sebastian Vettel, Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen. We would like to point out that all the top teams will start on ultrasofot tyres, which is why it will be interesting to understand what type of strategies will be carried out (a single stop is assumed, but pay attention to consumption. Ed.).
Seventh and eighth position for the two Renaults of Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz, who appeared in remarkably good form in Mexico City, followed by Charles Leclerc and the other Alfa Romeo Sauber of Marcus Ericsson. The Haas (Grosjean and Magnussen out in Q1) and Sergio Perez's Force India were disappointing. See you tomorrow, 20.10pm on Sky Sport F1 and TV8, for the start of this 2018 Mexican Grand Prix.
