F1 | GP Mexico, Leclerc wins a sensational pole in Mexico City

Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel will start from the front row in the Mexican Grand Prix which starts tomorrow at 13.10pm local time (20.10pm CET). However, it was not a linear session as the final minutes of Q3 were chaotic. Sebastian Vettel was unable to fully compete for pole position due to the yellow flags caused by Valtteri Bottas' accident.

The German had in fact been forced to abort the flying lap in which he was improving his time and could perhaps have beaten Max Verstappen's reference or at least overtaken his teammate Leclerc for second place.

After qualifying, however, the Dutchman from Red Bull was given a penalty for failing to slow down under the yellow flag, which meant he lost three places on the starting grid. Charles will therefore start in front of everyone with Sebastian at his side: for the Monegasque it will be the seventh pole position of the season, the ninth for Scuderia Ferrari Mission Winnow. For the Italian team it is also the sixth in a row, a streak that in history had only happened in 1961 and 1974.

Q1. Both Scuderia Ferrari drivers passed the first phase: Sebastian achieved a time of 1'16”859 in his first attempt, then dropping to 1'16”696, valid for progressing to the round. Charles opened his qualifying with 1'16”692, then improved to 1'16”364.

Q2. To get through to the decisive twelve minutes for assigning the first five rows of the grid to Sebastian and Charles, just one attempt on medium tires was enough, which allowed the two to earn the right to start the race on this compound. Vettel stopped the clock at 1'15”914, while Leclerc passed the round in 1'16”219.

Q3 with mockery. In the final phase of qualifying both Sebastian and Charles were able to use two sets of new soft tyres. In the first attempt neither the German nor the Monegasque completed a perfect lap: Vettel crossed the finish line in 1'15"170, while Charles achieved 1'15"024. The two SF90s then returned to the garage to change tires and attack the time of Max Verstappen, leader at the time. Charles launched himself and was lowering his time, but made a mistake in the third sector. Sebastian was also improving when Bottas crashed into the barriers, forcing the race direction to display the yellow flag. A real joke for the German who could have played for pole position or at least a front row position which he then recovered in light of the Red Bull driver's penalty.
