F1 GP Italia, Free Practice 1: Rosberg precedes Hamilton, followed by the Reds
Raikkonen third ahead of Vettel. Fifth time for Perez's Force India
Nico Rosberg you take the first exit a Monza and with a time of 1:22.959 he closes in the lead Free Trials 1, followed by Mercedes of his boxing partner Hamilton and from two Ferrari, with Raikkonen 1.088 from the top. Fourth place for the Red Hag, two tenths behind the Finn, followed by the Force India di Perez, while the other single-seater of the Silverstone team, driven by Alfonso Celis, obtained 12th place. Sixth and ninth time for the two Haas, unique together with Mercedes e Force India to have mounted the supersofts in this session. Bottas, seventh, precedes Verstappen and Ricciardo completes the top ten.
News – At the start in Monza the engines immediately roared in the pits, with a handful of drivers venturing onto the track for the usual installation lap. The soft tire is the one chosen at the start for the entire grid with the exception of Ricciardo, Sainz and Kvyat with the medium tyres, and Celis - who replaces Hulkenberg in FP1 - with the supersoft tyres. The first times arrived a few minutes after the start, with Bottas ahead of Button and Rosberg in 1:28.527. Then it's Hamilton's turn, the fastest in 1:25.124, with Rosberg following. Button tests the new Halo safety system, while the two Mercedes take turns in front for a moment, before Hamilton sets the pace again in 1:24.123. Wehrlein takes fifth place, Perez ahead of him followed by Celis and Magnussen. Ocon ninth with Manor.
Vettel moves into third place, almost a second behind Hamilton, followed by Raikkonen. Alonso enters the top ten with the sixth fastest time. With a time of 1:23.736 and the red tyre, Rosberg takes the lead followed by Hamilton. Only Perez and the Mercedes in the top 11 are on the softer tyre. The Mexican "breaks" the two Ferraris while Verstappen chases Raikkonen. Behind them we find Bottas, Ricciardo, Alonso and Button. Hamilton takes the lead again in 1:23.643; in addition to Massa, the two Toro Rossos are also still missing from the time list. Halfway through the session Sainz takes the 14th time, while Kvyat is 18th. Meanwhile, the thermometer on the track has already reached 32°C.
Massa finally joins the group and takes the 17th fastest time. The top 12 were all on the soft tire and Rosberg once again took the reins of the standings thanks to a time of 1:22.959. Followed by Hamilton, Vettel, Perez, Bottas, Kimi, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Celis and Button. The Force India rider is on supersoft. In the last fifteen minutes Raikkonen overtakes Perez while Grosjean takes ninth place.
Kimi overtakes Vettel and closes behind the two Mercedes, 1.088 behind, while with the supersoft compound Grosjean is sixth and Gutierrez tenth and finally ninth when the checkered flag waves. In the final minutes Alonso complained of gearbox problems and slowly returned to the pits.
Nico Rosberg takes home the first session ahead of Hamilton, Raikkonen, Vettel, Perez, Grosjean, Bottas, Verstappen, Gutierrez and Ricciardo.
