F1 | Chinese GP 2020: the Shanghai circuit could host two races

The Chinese Grand Prix was the first event of the 2020 season to be officially postponed due to the pandemic that developed in the Asian country. This inevitably led to a revision of the initial plans and a subsequent postponement of the date, in the hope that the emergency would be resolved in the second half of the year and that there would be the opportunity for the promoters to host the event in full safety.

At the moment, Formula 1 has only made known the calendar of the first eight European events, as the situation outside the old continent is still in progress and in the planning phase, even if doubts regarding the possible stages remain, especially considering the recent cancellation of the Singapore and Japan events. However, the promoters of the Chinese event would have had the approval to organize the Grand Prix during the second half of the season, as confirmed by those who manage sporting events in the city of Shanghai: "The international sports organizations care a lot about the global events in China and Shanghai. Although there have been changes to our events due to the pandemic, we have received support from international sports organizations and national associations for some of our events. We will be allowed to host events in Shanghai at some point in the second half of the year, depending on the pandemic situation,” said Xu Bin, director of Shanghai Sports Bureau during an interview with Radio Shanghai People.

Among the various proposals currently being considered, there would also be that of holding a double event on the Shanghai track, an idea pushed above all by FOM: "No decision has yet been made in this regard, it is something proposed by FOM. Formula 1 has announced that it will resume the championship with eight European races, without any rounds in Asia. The originally scheduled event has been postponed to the second half of the season. During the discussions, FOM asked us if we were available to host two races in Shanghai. It hasn't been decided yet. Everything will depend on the pandemic situation,” Xu Bin added.
