F1 GP Canada, Free Practice 2: Alonso ahead of everyone

Best time for Fernando Alonso in the second free practice session of the F1 Canadian GP. The Ferrari Spaniard preceded Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Romain Grosjean (Lotus) in a session held on a dry track and with light rain at times which did not bother the teams too much. Sebastian Vettel was only seventh with Red Bull but the German showed excellent race pace.

Free Practice Report 2 Canadian GP
The session started on a dry track. In the early stages the drivers completed the installation laps with the experimental Pirelli tyres. Rosberg, Raikkonen and Webber took the provisional best time from each other and shortly afterwards Alonso also took the lead. His best time didn't last long, Webber then took the lead back while Vettel, shortly after the first 10 minutes, was the protagonist of an unconsequential off-track exit.

After the first 17 minutes Alonso regained the lead and shortly after came close to the champions' wall.

Webber spun at Turn 6 after the first 20 minutes, losing the rear under braking but managed to restart. Shortly afterwards it was Massa's turn to take the lead with 1.16.001 after 23 minutes while Webber moved in behind him.

After the first half hour Hamilton lowers the limit to 1.15.620.

With 50 minutes to go Vettel put on supersoft tires to take the lead with a 1.15.378.

Webber briefly took the lead from him but the German improved his time by lapping in 1.15.280.

It was then Hamilton's turn to take the lead with a 1.14.830 on supersoft tires but Alonso did better with a 1.14.818.

The drivers then moved on to evaluate the race pace with the supersoft compound with Vettel recording excellent times in his long runs.

With 15 minutes to go the rain, initially limited to a few sprays, became more insistent in some parts of the circuit.

Vettel and Raikkonen, among others, were the protagonists of some braking errors while the Mercedes duo gradually improved their race pace, as did Alonso.

The track became more slippery: Grosjean went off the track and upon returning almost crossed paths with Webber, risking an accident. Maldonado was also long while Raikkonen was called back to the pits with a brake problem 10 minutes from the end.

Alonso further improved his race pace, constantly running in the low 1'18". Alonso seemed to have the advantage in race pace with empty tanks showing uniform tire wear while Vettel was more competitive than the Spaniard with a lot of fuel on board.

The Spaniard therefore finished with the best time ahead of Hamilton, Grosjean, Webber, Rosberg, Massa, Vettel, Sutil, Button, Ricciardo and Raikkonen.
