News – Rain is expected in the afternoon in Sao Paulo, but the session starts on a dry track: the air temperature is 29°C and the asphalt temperature is 52°C. A few minutes after the start, Grosjean breaks the silence with his Haas. Together with him Hartley and Giovinazzi: the Italian driver who replaces Magnussen also in Free Practice 2. The first time goes to the French driver, 1:13.080, on used soft tyre. Then Vettel takes care of setting the fastest lap and then Raikkonen and Bottas. Mercedes sets the pace in 1:10.270 and shortly afterwards drops to 1:09.860. The tire in this first phase is the soft yellow for everyone. Hamilton takes the lead in 1:09.742. Raikkonen makes him third place thanks to a time of 1:10.117, the first to switch to the supersoft compound. Vettel and Hartley follow him. Thirty minutes from the start: Hamilton, Bottas, Vettel, Kimi, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Massa, Ocon, Vandoorne and Sainz.

The two Mercedes also choose the softer compound. Bottas takes the lead, then overtaken by Hamilton in 1:09.515. At mid-session the Brit remains ahead of Bottas, Ricciardo, Vettel, Verstappen, Kimi, Massa, Hulkenberg, Ocon and Sainz. Verstappen, Kimi, Massa and Vandoorne switched back to the yellow compound for the race pace simulation. While in the top ten Ocon rose ahead of Massa in seventh position, and Alonso in tenth. Meanwhile, a bit of rain was reported in some parts of the track, but nothing that would imply a switch to wet compounds. In the race pace simulation, Ricciardo sets excellent times on the yellow tire, but it is Hamilton who impresses with the same tire, while Vettel clocks up a lot of laps on the supersoft. In the final minutes the German also switches to the yellow compound, but his simulation in the long run is closer to that of Bottas.

Hamilton ended the session in command, ahead of Bottas and Ricciardo.
