According to Brembo technicians, the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps falls into the category of the most demanding circuits for the brakes. On a scale of 1 to 5 it earned a difficulty index of 4, identical to the Monza track on which it will race in a week.

Considered the most complete track of the Formula 1 World Championship for the combination of curves and straights of all types, it is characterized by the presence of three prolonged braking periods, all exceeding 2 and a half seconds, an unapproachable value for all the Silverstone curves .

The use of the brakes during the Belgian Formula 1 GP

Despite being the longest track in the World Championship, the brakes are used just 7 times per lap, the same number as the Red Bull Ring which however is almost 2,7 km shorter. The brakes are used for 13 and a third seconds, equivalent to just 13 percent of the overall race duration. At the Hungaroring, however, employment was 23 percent.

In 6 of these braking sections the deceleration exceeds 4 g while at turn 9 it is just 0,9 g: it is no coincidence that at that point the single-seaters need a speed reduction of only 30 km/h, which can be achieved in just half a second and a pedal load of 6 kg. However, at curves 1, 5 and 8 the load exceeds 120 kg, reaching up to 174 kg.

The most demanding braking of the Spa-Francorchamps Round

Of the 7 braking sections of the Belgian GP, 3 are considered highly demanding on the brakes, 2 are of medium difficulty and the remaining 2 are light.

The hardest for the braking system is turn 18: the single-seaters arrive at 333 km/h and descend to 92 km/h in just 134 metres. Formula 1 drivers only need to brake for 2,78 seconds but have to apply a force of 207 kg on the brake pedal and face a deceleration of 5,9 g.
