Alfa Romeo has installed a new CE, the third for the Italian

F1 | Baku GP: Giovinazzi dropped ten positions on the grid

Antonio Giovinazzi doesn't start the Azerbaijani weekend in the best way. In fact, Alfa Romeo will mount a new electronic control unit on the drivers' single-seaters but since it is the third unit changed for the driver from Martina Franca (the regulation requires only two changes), Giovinazzi will have to serve the penalty of 10 positions on the grid departure.

Ferrari updated the EC after the breakdown in Bahrain against Charles Leclerc. The new control unit was made available to the Haas and Alfa Romeo customer teams for China, but the Swiss team, fearing not having enough time to adapt its wiring systems to the new CE, chose not to install the revised component, in Shanghai. However, during qualifying in China, Giovinazzi's car broke down and for this reason, Alfa Romeo installed an older CE for the race.

However, in view of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the team decided to install a new control unit on both single-seaters. Therefore, this is the third change for the Italian, against the two required by the regulations. Hence the ten position penalty on the starting grid.
