F1, FIA formalizes the use of blown diffusers until the end of the 2011 season

The FIA confirmed today that it will allow Formula 1 teams to use blown diffusers for the remainder of the season, after it was unanimously agreed by teams that the ban should be dropped.

After a controversial weekend at the British Grand Prix, the FIA announced that it would lift the ban on blown exhausts if all the teams reached an agreement.

In a document released by the FIA, the governing body confirmed that the rules remain those in force from Valencia to the European Grand Prix.

“All cars will be able to compete for the remainder of the season in 'Valencia' conditions,” the document states.

“We are optimistic that there will be no complaints about any engine mapping and tailpipe issues this season. In addition to the main part of the agreement reached at the TWG meetings, it was also agreed that no team would raise a protest against another team for the remainder of the season.”

The 'blown diffuser' issue will be resolved in 2012 with new technical rules established which require teams to race with the exhaust pipes exiting the top of the sides - so they will not be able to have any major effect on the diffuser area of the car.

“The teams have already agreed on stringent constraints on the position of the exhaust tip which will result in them exiting the bodywork much higher up and no longer in proximity to the diffuser,” the FIA said.

“Therefore, any aerodynamic benefits from the flow of exhaust gases over the bodywork will be reduced to an absolute minimum.”

“Engine mapping will be free in 2012 (within existing SECU FIA constraints) as, with the tailpipes in this new position, it is believed that an aerodynamic advantage will be incidental to their primary purpose.”
