F1 | FIA and Liberty Media ready to change the 2019 regulations
Whiting: "There are obvious difficulties when it comes to overtaking"
The joint work between Liberty Media and the FIA on the topic of overtaking continues. After the terrible Australian Grand Prix, in fact, the races in Bahrain and China offered a profoundly different spectacle compared to the inaugural event of this 2018 world championship, with several drivers engaging in good duels for the top positions in the rankings.
Despite this, however, Jean Todt believes that it is still quite difficult to carry out an overtaking manoeuvre, especially on circuits which, historically, do not help the spectacle.
Precisely in this sense, the FIA confirmed that a working group discussed this topic over the last week, reaching the conclusion that changes to the current technical regulation could be introduced in 2019. The Federation, together with Liberty Media, is reportedly evaluating changes to make the current Formula One models "simpler", so as to allow drivers a greater opportunity for overtaking. The discussion was concluded a few days ago and all proposals will be carefully evaluated during the next World Council.
Interviewed by AMuS, Whiting confirmed the FIA guideline, highlighting how the organizers are evaluating changes to the 2019 regulations to encourage the spectacle on the track.
Here are the words of the Race Director: “China and Bahrain were great races, but I think we need to continue the discussion about the show. There are obvious difficulties regarding overtaking and therefore we must commit ourselves in this sense."
