F1 | Ferrari, Vettel on the intermediate tires fitted in Suzuka qualifying: "It was a gamble, it didn't work"

The weekend of Japanese Grand Prix, the seventeenth seasonal round of the 2018 Formula One World Championship, will also be remembered for the gamble/mistake on the part of the Ferrari to fit intermediate tires on both cars in the first attempt of the third qualifying heat.

A strategy that compromised the Q3 of the Reds, who lost precious time on the track (having to return to the pits to fit the slicks, in this case the supersofts) failing to worry the Mercedes with Kimi Raikkonen setting the fourth fastest time and Sebastian Vettel even the ninth.

Discussing that choice, Hag said: "We talked about it with the other team members and we were not satisfied with what we did. It didn't work, we analyzed it and will keep it in mind for the future. With that type of rain it was a risk to go out with the intermediates, but if the rain had actually arrived and we had managed the tires we would have looked like geniuses in people's eyes and the others would have looked like idiots. It was a quick decision, we certainly should have considered better what to do".
