F1 | Ferrari, Binotto against the standardization of components: "We are not in favor"

Interviewed about the discussions for 2021, Mattia Binotto spoke out against the idea of standardization, underlining how a solution of this type would not allow small teams to save money on development.

According to the Team Principal, in fact, the idea of making some components the same would only increase costs, given the need to redesign the parts in question. As regards the budget cap, however, Binotto embraced the idea of the other team principals, specifying how a solution of this type would help small teams close the gap with the top teams.

“I'm still not happy,” said Mattia Binotto. “I'm not as happy as Ferrari. From the beginning we have always said that we are against standardization and we believe that the path taken takes precisely this direction. We are not in favor because competition exists in the DNA of this sport and the standardization of components goes against this spirit."

"Secondly, however, because standardizing does not mean saving, given that it leads the teams to redesign the entire single-seater", he continued. “Following a path of this type, therefore, involves a certain commitment also from an economic point of view. Honestly, I don't think the balance is positive. Sustainability is a key factor."

On the possible budget cap he added: “We are in favor of the expense cap. It is an agreement that we have all signed, given that we consider it fundamental to bridge the gap that exists between the top teams and the small teams. Maybe the ceiling is still too high for the teams, but at least there is some room for maneuver."

“We don't need standardization,” concluded the team principal. “There is no need to create standard parts to save money, as the costs would be high anyway. The top teams would still spend the maximum of the foreseen cap. I believe that we must evaluate the risks and benefits, always keeping an eye on the final objective”.
