F1 | Fernando Alonso is McLaren's new Racing ambassador

Despite Fernando Alonso's retirement from Formula 1 at the end of 2018, the two-time world champion and McLaren did not say goodbye. It is now well known that Alonso will participate in the next Indianapolis 500 supported directly by the English team, but the collaborative relationship between the two does not stop there.

McLaren has in fact announced that Fernando Alonso will continue to be part of the McLaren group as Racing ambassador of the English group for the next few years. This will allow the Spanish talent to remain helping the English team in on-track activities, giving his suggestions to the drivers and engineers: the English team has also foreseen that Alonso will take part in some test sessions to give his feedback on the development of the MCL34 and the MCL35, the car in the pipeline for 2020.

“Becoming a McLaren ambassador is a real honour. It is a special team and despite the challenges we have faced recently, it still remains a unique team. I already said when I decided to stop racing in Formula 1 that I would see myself linked to McLaren for a long time to come, so I'm happy to have this new role and to have the opportunity to stay close to what I consider my home." said Fernando Alonso after the official announcement.

“Fernando is part of the McLaren family” – added Zak Brown -. “He has earned a place in this team's history and continues to write chapters in McLaren history, so it is fitting to formalize his status as a McLaren ambassador, alongside another two-time world champion, Mika Hakkinen. His suggestions and views will be welcomed by both our drivers and our engineers, while his character and status undoubtedly remains valued by the fans and our partners” concluded the CEO of McLaren Racing.
