F1, Ecclestone and the democratic turning point: “The distribution of revenues must be more equitable”
Bernie Ecclestone wants a Premier League-style distribution of proceeds for the new Concordia
Bernie Ecclestone is thinking of revolutionizing Formula 1 once again, this time to make it more "democratic" with a more equitable distribution of FOM proceeds, so as to allow even small teams to have their say on the track against the well-known big teams. The current Concorde Agreement, i.e. the set of commercial agreements between the F1 teams and Ecclestone's FOM which manages the commercial rights of the category, provides for a clear economic imbalance in favor of the larger teams (Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren), who receive much more from Ecclestone thanks to their history and recent results. For 2020, the year in which the current Concordia expires, Ecclestone is already looking at the Premiere League model, judged to be fairer.
«The Premier League has a good revenue distribution system, and I think it could work in F1 too – Ecclestone explained in an interview with the Times – Some people will like this idea more, some others less and some will be disappointed, but I have already told Toto Wolff not to think he can put any more money in the bank. I am studying the situation to change it so that there is more equality."
