Vettel keeps the math for the title open, Kimi narrowly ahead of Verstappen

F1 | Double podium for Scuderia Ferrari in the United States

Scuderia Ferrari returns to the podium with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, second and third at the Circuit of the Americas after an incredible race full of overtaking and twists. The last one is the one which, at the end of the race, gave Kimi a well-deserved podium back, after Verstappen, who had overtaken him at the end, was penalized for having gained the DRS zone by cutting the track with all four wheels. With three races to go, the world championship remains mathematically open, with Seb at 265 points and Kimi at 163. The starting grid for the top positions reads Hamilton-Vettel-Bottas.Ricciardo, Raikkonen-Ocon. The sun is shining and it's hot, after the morning storm: 27 degrees in the air and 36 on the asphalt. Seb's start was beautiful as he took first position already on the climb.

Kimi, however, loses a position, but overtakes Force India already on the second lap and starts chasing the Bottas-Ricciardo duo. With the DRS, Hamilton gets closer and Seb has to give way when braking on the longest straight. Kimi has a better pace at this stage and is trailing less than a second behind Ricciardo. The track was free when, on lap 13, the Red Bull went to the pits. He will retire three laps later. Sebastian changes the tires - which were causing some problems - on lap 17. He mounts the Softs, the hardest in the available range. When he gets back on track he is fifth and immediately very fast. The first Mercedes at the pit stop is that of Bottas, while Seb sets the fastest lap in 1'39”702. On lap 19 Hamilton goes to the pits, Sebastian is very close at the exit.

Kimi goes to the pits and he also puts on yellow stripe tyres. So he gets back on Bottas, who in turn has recovered from Seb who is managing the race resources. When Verstappen, who has recovered from the bottom, chooses to change tires for the second time, Ferrari adapts its strategy, also stopping Seb, who is on Supersofts. The n.5 returns to the track ahead of Max, but Kimi puts on a show by overtaking Bottas at turn 12 for second position. Seb's pace definitely improves, the gap to Bottas decreases.

Vettel's lap 48 is the fastest of the race and takes him into the DRS zone. Masterpiece at the start of lap 51: he attacks the Mercedes on the climb towards the first corner and passes it on the outside, slipping into the gap with Vandoorne lapped. Then he goes to pick up Kimi, who has much less fresh tires. And right at the end he had to give up third place to Verstappen. But it's a disappointment that lasts a few minutes.
