F1 | The new regulations for 2021 engines have been defined

Today, Tuesday 31 October 2017, a meeting was held in Paris between the FIA, the leaders of Formula One, the current teams present in the Circus and various engine manufacturers, to plan the guidelines regarding the engines that will equip the single-seaters starting from 2021.

We also discussed some of the fundamental aspects of the series which concern lowering costs, confirming hybrid technology and increasing the sound of the power units.

Here are the future changes:

  • 1,6 liter V6 Turbo Hybrid engines.
  • Higher motor rotation speed of 3000 rpm to improve the sound.
  • Predefined design parameters to limit development costs to deter extreme designs and operating conditions.
  • Removal of the MGU-H.
  • More powerful MGU-K with the option for drivers to save energy based on race strategy
  • Single turbo with dimensional constraints and weight limits.
  • Batteries and uniform electrical control unit.
  • High level of compatibility for external design for engine/chassis/gearbox
  • Stricter rules regarding the use of fuel.

"The proposal presented today is the result of a series of meetings that took place in 2017 with the current teams participating in the World Championship and with the engine engineers who showed interest in this proposal – declared Ross Brawn, F1 general director of motorsport – We listened carefully to what fans think of the current PU and what they would like to see in the near future, with the aim of defining a simpler, cheaper set of regulations and louder engines. This will create the conditions to facilitate the entry of new manufacturers into Formula One. The new Formula One aims to be the world's leading sporting competition with cutting-edge technology. We believe that future engines can achieve this goal".
