F1 Commission, 2012 calendar and changes to team names approved

The F1 Commission yesterday approved changes to the naming of three Formula 1 teams ahead of the 2012 season. Next year Team Lotus will become Caterham, Renault will be renamed Lotus and Virgin will adopt the name of Russian manufacturer Marussia.

The Telegraph writes that despite the name change, Richard Branson's Virgin will continue "to sponsor" the team.

“As part of the new agreement, valid for four years, Virgin will no longer have shares but will continue its role as sponsor,” the article reads.

The changes, voted on by 26 members including Bernie Ecclestone, Jean Todt, organisers, teams, manufacturers and sponsors, will be subject to approval at the FIA World Council in December.

The 2012 calendar was also discussed in Geneva, with the events in Austin, Korea and Bahrain in doubt and Turkey intending to return to the calendar with lower taxes.

But a source close to the Texas race said the F1 Commission would confirm next year's calendar published by the FIA.
