F1 | Renault case, Ralf Schumacher warns: “The sanctions could be heavy”

Interviewed by Sky Germany, Ralf Schumacher commented on the protest initiated by Racing Point against Renault, underlining how the French team could pay a high price for this sporting offense found by Lawrence Stroll's team.

According to the German, in fact, the FIA could use a heavy hand against the team directed by Cyril Abiteboul, especially if the investigations were to highlight violations in the braking system, given that automatic aids managed by the control unit are absolutely prohibited by the sporting regulations currently in force.

Racing Point, we remember, presented a twelve-page dossier during the last GP in Japan, which would prove the presence on the Renault of an automatic and predefined braking distribution based on the position of the car on the track. A prohibited electronic aid that would help the RS19 express its maximum potential in every corner.

It goes without saying that the situation is absolutely dangerous, given that this investigation risks compromising Renault's entire season and the placings achieved by Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo in recent weeks.

“Confirmation of the offense would be a disaster for Renault, as they would have to rethink everything”, Ralf Schumacher told the German press. “The driver is normally responsible for adjusting the brake balance, so help of this kind would allow you to brake later and intervene on the throttle earlier. You would gain speed at every turn and that would be a great advantage. A control of this type would certainly make the process faster than what happens under human control."

On the investigation launched by the FIA and the Racing Point protest he added: “The suspicion must be reasonable, since you don't make an accusation of this type without being 100% sure. If the Federation were to agree with Racing Point, Renault would be in a catastrophe, not to mention that it is not the first time they have attracted attention."

Schumacher, in any case, believes that the issue will be resolved quickly: “The FIA is overwhelmed with work and this is certainly a mammoth task. They must be sure of what they do, given that it would be a big problem for Renault."
