"Tighter competition, but the best teams will continue to win", the note from the British engineer

F1 | Brawn: “The new regulations will not drastically change the general order of things”

2022, with the presentation of the new single-seaters that is characterizing these weeks, is presenting us with completely different cars compared to those of the recent past characterized by regulatory changes. A new era for Formula 1 where these decisions were made to liven up the spectacle on the track, even if as underlined by Ross Brawn these innovations will not drastically subvert the balance of power between the teams. In short, you won't have a BrawnGP-style surprise, of which the current sporting director of the Circus was the owner, as happened in 2009.

"The new rules will take time to find stability, but I think we will be in a significantly better position going forward with the type of car we will have compared to what we had – declared Brawn, interviewed by various media, quoted by Formula1.com – There is a lot of optimism for the season and I think this year we will see some interesting results from some of these young drivers who are coming through. With the right car they will make us have fun. Every decision we made was not to diminish the sport, but to make it more attractive to more teams and to achieve closer competition for the future, while still leaving a meritocracy so that the best teams still win".

Brawn, completing his analysis, added: “I honestly don't think the regulations will drastically change the overall order of things. I think we'll see some battles between midfield teams. I think we'll have a bigger group of competitive teams. We expected a Mercedes or a Red Bull as the winner, unless something had happened. But today we have a number of great drivers. Lando Norris, the Ferrari drivers, George Russell on the Mercedes. I think there are many driver combinations that will give us a fantastic season. And if there are three or four of them that come into the mix, that's even better".

In conclusion, the sporting director of the Circus expressed his point of view on 2022:  "I am optimistic for next season. I think the big teams will always do a good job. They have the expertise and experience. As much as I would like to, I don't think we'll see teams that start from behind and end up dominating this year. Not we want that kind of disparity or that shock, because that would suggest that it's all become a little random and can never be random. It must be meritocracy".
