F1 | Brawn: “Changes to the qualifying format? We want to make the weekend less predictable"

While waiting for the new regulation, which will come into force starting from 2021, the next season could include some changes which should affect the qualifying structure.

The sporting director of Formula One tried to clarify the matter Ross Brawn: "In recent days I have read a series of statements from drivers and experts regarding ideas to make the race weekend format more spectacular. To try to clarify the situation and avoid misunderstandings, there are discussions about experimenting in 2020 with changes to the qualifying format with the aim of making the weekend less predictable".

He then added: “We are all aware that the current qualifying format is exciting and spectacular but it is also important that the race, the highlight of the weekend, is the best it can be".

Any solution will still have to be tested live: “There is no better measurement than the track. The teams and the FIA are studying the possibility of a revised format for a small number of events next season. With stable sporting and technical regulations for 2020 it is the perfect time for such assessments".

At the moment, however, there is nothing official: “We are finalizing all the details but the feedback received so far is, for the most part, positive. I understand that purists might be worried, but we shouldn't be afraid to do an experiment, otherwise we can't progress. We don't want change for change's sake; we want to improve our sport because, like car development, if you stand still you risk slipping backwards".
