F1 | Binotto: “Giovinazzi is not yet ready for Ferrari”
“After just a year, it would have been a big responsibility”
A place at Ferrari would have given the driver from Martina Franca too much responsibility; this is the point of view of the team principal of the Scuderia di Maranello, Mattia Binotto.
It was announced yesterday the arrival of Carlos Sainz who will share the garage with Charles Leclerc. The Cavallino is therefore betting on young people and the track will decide whether this was the right choice. However, regarding Antonio Giovinazzi who was spoken of as a probable replacement, the team principal, interviewed by Sky Italia, explained why he was not taken:
“Antonio is a guy I respect a lot, he completed his first season last year so I think going to Ferrari after just one year would have been a great responsibility. We are counting on his development and we will certainly help him, he is part of our plans but first he needs to gain experience."
Former Ferrari driver Mika Salo also shares the same opinion:
“That's why they got Sainz, that's the only reason. The question remains though why if they have a junior program, they don't take the drivers from there. He pushed Kimi, but nothing more. He was waiting for a place in Ferrari, and it's a bit strange, but Sainz will do the job well”.
