F1, the sound generator for the engines arrives

Sound generator F1 – The FIA has revealed that it plans to introduce a 'sound generator' into Formula 1 to improve the noise produced by V6 turbo hybrids. The teams, FIA and FOM recently signed a rules package for 2017 and improving the sound of the engines is one of the priorities.

Fabrice Lom, FIA powertrain manager, said at the Spanish GP: “There is a feeling that sound is not enough, we have had good results with what we call 'sound generator'. It's not fake, but it's not purely natural either, let's face it, but it would really improve the intensity and quality of the engine sound."

Mercedes has taken a leading role in efforts to improve the sound of current engines and a job advert recently appeared seeking a sound engineer for the Brixworth factory to try to improve the sound of V6 engines without sacrificing the performance of the power unit or the car.

Lom, a former Renault engineer, said plans to introduce the sound generator are still in the early stages: “It's a bit early to talk about it, it's still in development. But we are using the energy on the exhaust to improve the sound, even if it is not much because we recover a lot of it for other purposes."

The device could debut in 2018.
